Sarah Palin is smart, witty, honest, and down to earth

I'm sure I'll get blasted for saying this, but I think Sarah Palin is smart, witty, honest, and down to earth. I really like her. Some people seem to go ballistic when they hear her speak, but I find myself smiling and shaking my head "yes".

Here's a simple case in point. Apparently at her keynote speech at the Tea Party gathering this weekend, she had jotted some notes on her hand. Who hasn't done that at one time or another? Some are likening it to Obama's chronic reliance on the teleprompter. Hardly! Anyone who's given a speech knows there's a world of difference between reading a script versus referencing notes. But the fact she added some notes on her hand is SO CUTE! Anyway, she's gotten some flack for it and now all the media are curious what she has written on her hands. At a subsequent event she wrote "Hi Mom" on her hand for the world (and her mom) to see. Ah, so cute! (and witty).

Regarding Tea Party, its grass roots appeal and clear ideology of less government, reduced taxes and spending, and "I know better how to spend my money than the government does" will make it a growing and powerful force in US politics for the next few years at least.

I am a middle aged white Jewish American family man, with a master's degree from MIT and a career in high tech and management. By definition, I am not stupid, ignorant, racist, or whatever other epitaphs are thrown at Tea Party people. I don't know if I'd vote for Palin in a presidential primary (I prefer Romney) but I would vote for her enthusiastically if she manages to become the GOP candidate. I may not be your stereotypical Tea Party person, but maybe I'm more typical than you think, just look at who voted Scott Brown in Massachusetts.

Proposed 1,081-acre Lyman Town Forest

Here's an article [http://www.thebridgeweekly.com/story.php?t=s&n=7916] about the proposed land purchase in Lyman, which my wife Lisa helped spearhead. They've been working on this deal for several years, and its finally coming together. A bond will be on the town ballot in March.

An informational town meeting was held last week (Jan 19), the town hall filled to capacity. The meeting included a 15 minute presentation by my son Jarrett, who has studied the plan as part of his high school Senior Capstone project. Jarrett presented his perspective why conservation land, and this parcel specifically, has value to the town - including environmental, historical, recreational, and financial benefits.

Dear Senator Shaheen, re: healthcare reform

Dear Senator Shaheen:

I received your latest email on healthcare reform ( http://shaheen.enews.senate.gov/mail/util.cfm?gpiv=2100052863.16868.11&gen=1 ). The bullet pointed goals seems admirable and actionable. But then you lost all credibility when I saw the statements about it being fully paid for and will reduce the deficit. Do you take us for idiots? This massive entitlement has to be paid somehow, and those costs will be passed on to us, the consumer or will be borrowed.

Please examine the Republican proposals for healthcare reform ( http://www.gop.gov/solutions/healthcare ). There are strategic elements ignored by the current bills, like tort reform, cross-state line markets, cost transparency, etc.
Despite all the rhetoric, the conservatives have a wisdom and experience apparently lacking in the liberal approaches. Please take them seriously.

The best solution is to scrap the current bills, start over, keep it short and simple, enact incremental improvements rather than an overhaul, and integrate the conservative ideas for healthcare reform.

U.S. Senator Scott Brown good for Israel

Begin forwarded message:

From: Matthew Ross
Date: January 20, 2010 4:43:56 PM EST
Subject: U.S. Senator Scott Brown

As you all know by now Scott Brown (R) was elected to be the next U.S. Senator representing Massachusetts. Not only is this great news for the citizens of the United States and Massachusetts but also for the Jewish Community.

Having seen Senator Brown speak on multiple occasions and read his positions on issues of great interest to the Jewish Community, it is clear that American Jews and the State of Israel have a strong friend. Senator Brown has a deep understanding of the United States' special relationship with Israel and is particularly sensitive to Israel's unique security situation.

As an indication of how Sen. Brown's election has already had an effect on Israel, please see the following article:
Obama's lost senate seat is a victory for Netanyahu: http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1143891.html

And also see this article from Long Island which states: "Well, to put it mildly, American Jews now have a good friend in the senate."http://www.5tjt.com/news/read.asp?Id=5693

I hope that you all join me as the Jewish community coalesces in its support of Sen. Brown and his efforts in the newly configured U.S. Senate.

Regards,

Matthew S. Ross
